Parasphendale

Parasphendale are normal- type mantids. The female`s wings are reduced. The arms of this mantid are big and strong. The female is very compact. Due to their striped colours, they are optimally disguised.

Parasphendale inhabits bushes in velds and open, dry areas.

This genus is very aggressive, so they should be single- kept. Up to L4/ L5 they can be kept together, also adult males. Females should be seperated as soon as possible.

At present, at least 9 species are described, e.g. Parasphendale affins (GIGLIO-TOS, 1915), P. africana (GIGLIO-TOS, 1915), P. costalis (KIRBY, 1904) and P. minor (SCHULHESS-SCHINDLER, 1898).

Typical look of the nymphs:

  • L2: black, ant- mimicry
  • L3: turn into species- typical look, like bigger nymphs

Parasphendale is a beautiful and remarkable genus. Even if this genus is robust, they make demands in keeping and breeding. They do not tolerate wrong temperature or supply air.
